Bio

Though officially incarnated 2006-2007, this project has been on again off again since '97. A single man with a myriad of ideas and visions. Just me. I start when I want. I finish when I want. This is a window through my head to the other side of my consiousness. Bells. Clicks. Bangs. Where car crashes are symphonies. Where lying broken on the floor is transcending walking in agony. Where staring at a blank wall is realizing the masterpiece yet to unfold.

What is the Fever? Is there a cure?

Guess what? I got a fever! And the only prescription.. is more cowbell!
Actually, The Fever comes as referring to the Bubonic Plague(The Black Death) which killed an estimated 75 million people worldwide and two thirds of the population of Europe in the 1300's. The fact that something as small as a single bacterium within a flea could decimate a continent, cripple the world, be theoretically linked to global cooling and also be linked to genetic defects that provide some sort of protection against HIV and smallpox is fascinating to me.
It lends a twisted bit of hope to the lone guy sitting at home making music. You are never too small to infect the world.
A cure? There is none. Resistance is futile. Accept your fate and embrace the noise.


How would you describe your work? What are your influences?

Sometimes I find it difficult to describe what I do. It's kind of on the borderline of suggested genres such as industrial, electronica, drum n bass, techno. It is what it is and that is it.
I'm influenced by many sources from all over the spectrum: Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, Zao, Strapping Young Lad, Psyclon Nine, Aphex Twin, Today Is The Day, etc... Also by movies of all sorts, personal paranoia, politics and worldwide ignorance.



What do you find visually stimulating right now? Any local artists that we need to keep an eye on?

I don't think there is anything specific at the moment. I can be very ADD at times. Something may catch my eye out of the blue but I may not go looking for something else from the source. I guess it's laziness too.

How did the project start?

I have been tinkering with this stuff for years. It was kinda just for me to do something constructive. It was suggested to me to do something with it on a more public scale. About that same time, I was approached with the idea of a band that would incorporate my music into a group. I jumped on it, but some of my material didn't fit the loose mold we had created. So I decided to go ahead and put out the rest of my creation on my own. I adopted the name The Fever and here I am.

How would you describe your music to people?

It's kind of on the borderline of suggested genres such as industrial, electronica, drum n bass, techno. Founded on drums with keyboards and random samples. Sometimes the opposite of that. Ordinary everyday noises twisted into beats and melodies. With some very ADD moments in between. Just listen to it.

What other activities / things do you enjoy doing when not playing music?(hobbies, crafts, events, eating, family)

I like to watch movies, play video games, vegetate on the internet. I have a current obsession with swedish fish for some reason. I'm also awaiting the arrival of my first child, which is exciting to me as well.

If you could play a show with any band, past or present, who would it be? What music would you want them to perform?

Hmmmmm. 1994 Nine Inch Nails lineup. 1988 Skinny Puppy. Current Strapping Young Lad. Dillinger Escape Plan with Mike Patton on vocals. I'm sure as soon as I go to bed tonight I'll think of 100 more....



Do you think that the notion of an artist's "style" is fabricated to boost sales and marketability? Are artists then forced to limit their body of work to specific content or media in an effort to facilitate easy recognization?

I do believe that there are artists out there that set out to write a hit for the radio. There are also bands that are put together by record companies or whoever. I mean, if you don't have a problem being what someone else wants you to be then go for it. They aren't tainting my soul.
And when it comes to current "trends", I'm sure that artists tend to box themselves into a certain sound or feel. If I were to start a band today and took all our influence from...say...Hanson and Whitesnake. I would bet that the people we would appeal to would be limited and the people who would even give it a listen would be fewer still. It is completely fathomable. Few and far between are the artists who do something truly original. Somewhere there is ground to fit into what is popular, do it in your own way, and honestly not let current trends force your hand at you work.

What were your favorite cartoons as a kid??

Transformers(fuck live action man...), Thundercats, Voltron, Robotech, G.I.Joe, and I really like the Wacky Races. They show it sometimes on the Boomarang channel.

How do you (as being the only band member) create music for The Fever? What programs and instruments do you use?

It tends to be very random. I'll get the itch and sit down at the computer and go to town. Sometimes something good comes out of it, sometimes nothing. I have a ton of 2 or 3 bar loops (not to mention complete compositions)that will probably never be used for anything.
Right now I'm using a program called Making Waves and Sound Forge. I have some random editing tools and samplers as well. I do plan on incorporating guitar and maybe some vocals or spoken word.



If there were no financial limits whatsoever for you, what constraints would you most like to overstep? Are there other mediums you would explore?

I'm naïve when it comes to what is out there to make what I do easier or more interesting. I'm sure there is a ton of things I'd love to play with, but I simply don't know they exist.

Did you grow up in Virginia? (If not, when / why did you move here?)

I was born and raised here in Hampton Roads. Wow for me.
There is a move to Georgia looming in my future...

What other bands are you in?

I'm currently in DEVILJOY. Though for one reason or another, my time with them may be nearing an end. At which time I will shift all focus to The Fever.

What do you think of the current state of our country? (Rising gas prices, school shootings, presidential fiascos, the upcoming election, the wall in Iraq)

Our country is in sad shape. We do still have it better than many places across the world because we can say that it is in sad shape. We live in a society that is all about profit, so rising gas prices and completely out of control health care should not really be a big surprise to anyone. Nor should the state of government. Those with money would like to keep it...(who can blame them)..but will pay off whoever they need to to keep it. When the people who make the decisions for us also have personal interests outside of the people they represent, who do you think they are going to look out for first? Simply put...anyone who believes that there is nothing wrong with this country or the way in which it operates and is run, needs to OPEN THEIR EYES AND WAKE THE FUCK UP! And dammit, save the fucking bees!



The business side of being an artist: how do you market/promote yourself, and does it work? How do you cope?

Currently there is no real marketing as I am just giving away my music. I have my Myspace page and I post what is available to people. That is about it.

How would you like to see the local music scene change? (venues, fans, other bands) Do we need to have better venues? Better ways of booking shows? Which way do you find best to get fans to come out to shows? (word of mouth / internet / flyers)

I'm not sure what can make this scene better. There have been great bands, great venues, good promoters, the whole deal. People just don't come out. I don't know what it is. You can even offer a free show and flyer it, polute Myspace and email with it, call people, whatever and still only have 15 people show up. I have seen it across several genre boundaries(another issue altogether)and i just don't get it. Picky and biased club owners don't help either...like when they won't promote or cut a band's set way down just because they don't care for them.....Gil's for example.

How long have you been creating?

Well over forty years. (You can get back up off the floor now!) That is hard for me to see on paper. I am a real overnight sensation. Some nights are just a lot longer than others. My night toward fame and fortune is now approaching a half century. I try to do something every day but have only about 3500 drawings and paintings surviving.

What got you started doing art?

Some of my earliest childhood memories originate from trying to draw Sunday Comics with my Dad. Both of my parents were artistic, but my father was also a realist who had just returned from Korea and went to college on the G.I. Bill. He liked making drawings and painting but was beginning a family. As I said earlier, I seem to remember my Dad trying to teach me how to draw by using the Sunday Comics as a reference. This early lesson stuck. He would point to a line on Beetle Bailey or Peanuts with his pencil and have me focus on just that line or segment. He would draw that line and have me do the same. He would direct my attention to the next segment until I had magically reproduced Beetle Bailey. Looking back, I never connected the experiences of Korea with the selection of comics to draw until just now! I was probably three years old at the time, so that was 1958 or so. My mother was also talented. She worked for a photography studio and did colorization of black and white portraits. I used to get into her paints and create Havoc. I knew she would be mad for some reason but she never was mad at me for making "art". My younger brother is an artist as well. He is a painter and a primary reason for me coming from the shadows of anonymity. (Hopefully.)

Describe your work to someone who has never seen it before.

A mixture of Don Martin, R. Crumb, and Ralph Steadman. My art also was greatly influenced by the political art of the 1800s and early 1900s (Thomas Nast comes to mind.). It's a gritty style and very freehand. My watercolors look like something from William Blake or Francis Bacon after an MK Ultra event. If you plan to edit this interview, you could say it looks like editorial cartoons without all that unintelligible writing at the bottom. Some of my material repulses people or disturbs them at a level they often fail to verbalize. I often fail to verbalize my own reaction to something I have done and those are the ones I think people should see.

What do you find visually stimulating right now? Any local artists that we need to keep an eye on?

The smartass kid in me would reply internet porn because I cannot afford live models. The dirty old man in me would reply internet porn because I cannot afford Playboy magazine (Is that still published?). The middle-aged man in me says definitely NOT internet porn because I am still trying to land a Jay Oh Bee and I cannot afford art alone just yet.

I have recently discovered Francis Bacon via the VOOM HD channel which runs some excellent art programming. His post WWII work is just plain spooky as any post-war imagery probably is. My exposure to local artists has been minimal for a variety of reasons. It embarrasses me no names pop to my mind. Due to our environs here, most art is underground unless you are catering to the tourist seaside market. Being my age inhibits blending in with the young artists along with the fact I look like a cop. It's just too hot and humid here to grow long hair and a beard for most of the year.

What other artists or movements inform your work/aesthetics/sensibilities?

I am rather ignorant of movements. I began my own movement about 20 years ago which I have named Past Life Caricatures. Part of that involves drawing what people may have looked like in a past life. It is a glacial movement. I recall how upset the Establishment was when the Pop Art stuff hit the fan. The comic book style paintings and Warhol's satire... I relish change and the effect it has on regular people. I particularly like the effect change has on the controlling or prevalent powers at the point of transition. Artists who come along and shake things up and signal to the world that another point of view is available. Many people have little capacity to handle more than a few different perspectives. I think artists may have the ability or potential to deal with more than a few.

Right now we are dealing with a major change in the creative world. The established hierarchy distains digital art. It threatens them to some degree and I hear things like it is cheating and not real art at all. I bet there was a French Caveman who became ostracized for using vegetable matter to color his wall paintings by the other Cave Artisans. The guy who came up with pencils displaced the charcoal dudes. I am confident Eastman pissed off painters. Technology always introduces new tools and people always find alternative uses for them beyond their original intent. I could not wait for computer tech to catch up to my own visions of how I could employ it. We have it now and its being used to wonderful effect. I have forty years of drawings and photographs to serve as a solid foundation for original and creative digital art. Check that. Original art - plain and simple. The image resulting from your efforts is what should matter. Is it good or not?

As to what affects my sensibilities, well the deluge of material available to someone seeking inspiration is right there ready to spring from a keyboard. MySpace friends linking for example allows me to explore images that interest me in a real flow of consciousness type style which amazes me. (Especially when several hours have passed and you realize its 3am.)

If there were no financial limits whatsoever for you, what constraints would you most like to overstep? Are there other mediums you would explore?

Political Correctness. Gardening/landscaping projects. Home repairs.

If I had the unlimited resources businesses use to purchase beneficial legislation, I would use it to buy enough votes to impeach two really great guys and make sure Nader had at least one day in office as president and make the guy in charge of the FDA swear him in. I would then combine politics and art by tagging the crap out of the White House and have an Andy Jackson-style inauguration party. You would likely find me painting all the bare overpasses in town with a thousand like-minded artists.

Did you grow up in Virginia? (If not, when/why did you move here?)

I am over fifty years old and I often draw cartoons. I do not think many see that as ever having grown up. I take pride and solace in that. I very rarely get paid for those cartoons which prove I am a young rube still. To demonstrate things are relative, my desire to come here was driven by the liberal atmosphere here. I also dig the beach, seafood, and strontium 90. I lived in three different deserts so far and I could not kick sand cold turkey so this place made sense.

Do you do gallery shows?

I would like to do gallery shows again. It has been a long time since my last one. I have a supporter in Italy who has put on several shows in Milan for me and in planning another soon. My brother berates me for not pressing this avenue of promotion. He also has suggested I go bigger in my works. Others close to me have suggested this as well and that may serve as rationale for seeking a show here soon. Are you offering?

What's your favorite piece (at the moment)? Why?

A pencil portrait I did of Richard Nixon in 1970. I recently drew a pen and ink copy of it to practice my hand and eye after working with a lot of multimedia stuff. I needed a return to my strength in the basics. It is also an election year and a flashback to forty years ago when our federal government was nearly as screwed up as it is now. That is a harsh judgment but a fair one. Nixon deserved to be impeached and never pardoned. Clinton perhaps deserved to be served divorce papers but not impeachment. Bush has dissolved most of the Bill of Rights and has run the most inept and corrupt administration we have documentation on. I need to get the fire back to do political stuff again. Bush has just shocked me into inactivity. I am stunned Americans have allowed this to go on for eight years. We have forfeited our place as examples to the world. I doubt a recovery is possible now that the world has seen behind the curtains of our Oz.

The business side of being an artist: how do you market/promote yourself, and does it work? How do you cope?

I really do not have a business side to my art. I suffer the normal Fear many artists have regarding showing material and flogging it. I have done sales jobs in the past and even won awards for the work. But at what cost ? Artists need old-fashioned patrons to free artists for their art. The risk of losing one's soul and dignity is too great. I think what I do is good. Some of it is great and is on par with other famous caricaturists' work. But my needs, my basic needs are being met, food, clothing, shelter, do not depend on sales. It is liberating. It may also be delusional and too safe. Fame brings its own deluge. Crumb has said a lot about this and I chose to avoid that madness at an age when I may not have been able to handle it. I am pretty old now but feel mature enough to face the crowd and its criticisms. Hey, I just like making things. I have 3000 pictures no one has seen. I think in 30 years from now, more will see it than all the years before. Just another guy who made it after he was dead.

"Ribs and Whiskey" by Widespread Panic. Played at excessive volume over JBL monitors powered by a phase linear 400 amp.

What came first, the art or the misery? Explain.

Dennis: The misery had to come first. The birthing process! Imagine the opening differential alone, not to mention hormonal disruptions…then of course the forceps left their mark on my cranium… art is not a misery for me – sales are!

Are you from Virginia or did you relocate here? Where did you grow up?

Homegrown. I have lived in Norfolk most of my life.



Do you have a particularly favorite (photo/ painting) you have created and why is it your favorite?

Hard to say if I have a favorite shot. But, if I had to choose one I think it would be the portrait of my friend Icy Mike from the band Triple Shot.



What about photography captivated your interest?

I have always been captivated buy a nice photograph. Once I picked up a camera and took it seriously I became driven to capture things the way I see them.



What advice would you give to a person interested in becoming a professional photographer?

I actually dont consider myself a professional. I do get paid a few times a year for my craft, and get lucky and sell a few pieces of art a year. I wish I could figure out a way to make enough to support myself shooting photos. Then I would consider myself a professional.
I love doing portraits and that pays well when you can get it.

Best advice I can give someone wanting to be a pro is shoot weddings if you can get the work. I dont shot them myself. Tried it a couple times and its just not my cup of tea.



Tell us about your experiences getting started as a professional photographer.

Just shoot for the love of it and build from there.



Do you prefer working with digital or film cameras? Why?

I prefer the instant gratifaction of digital, but do love to break out my Large Format film cameras. I have got to finish setting up my dark room this spring and get to making some prints by hand.

Can you tell us about your technical process.(camera type/ photo editing programs)

My favorite digital camera is my Nikon D70s, I also have a Nikon D2X which is larger and heavier to lug around so it stays home most of the time unless I have some serious work to do. As far as editing programs I just shoot RAW to begin with and fiddle around in Photoshop some. I usually try to keep it simple and just adjust sharpness, contrast and lighting there.



Can you tell us about your creative process. How do you come up with ideas for photo shoots and shots?

I just look at the world around me.

What are predominating concerns as an artist, and how do you express them?

Getting my work seen. Where can we as artist show our work is my largest concern. Im sure there are alot of places, but how do you find somewhere to share your work?

What do you want to photograph that you've not yet shot?

More people....



Can you think of a particularly fun client or project that you've had?

I have a friend Levi Little that does some producing and guidance for music artist, that gets me a gig now and then. I havnt had a bad time shooting any of those folks.

What about a really boring project that you did just to pay the rent?

N/A If it doesnt interest me I dont do it. I shoot because I love to, not because I have to.



What are your present works about? How would you describe your work?

I love abstract photography. I am always trying to see things from my warped point of view.

What other interests do you have? (besides photography)

I like the outdoors alot. I do alot of gardening around the house when the weather is nice. Fishing is also very relaxing to me.



What artists have influenced you, and how?

My good friend Neal Chaves has influenced me most. Hes a local guy that has taught me alot about photography, another close friend June Ferrol from Venice who also has some fantastic shots and simular taste in what to shoot. I also like the works of Adams and Weston to name a couple.

What do you think of the current trend of tattooed, alternative nearly (or fully) naked models such as Suicide Girls or various other alterna sites? Do you think it has a negative or positive effect on photography?

Love it. Wish I could get some models for that type of art work.

What's the most played song on your iPod (or an equivalent music playing device) in the past week?

Jack Johnsons new cd has been the most played this week.



What came first, the art or the misery? Explain.

The misery came first. I always had an interest in photography but many years of paying child support didnt let me afford it. The children had to come first. Once I became financially able to get some nice equipment I was able to realease my pent up creativity. I have always had a need to create....

Band: Someone Else's Music

Someone Else's Music

Someone Else's Music is the ever-evolving solo project of B.S.C. It isn't really the name of a band, more a statement. This really is just someone else's music.

As a project, Someone Else's Music officially started in 2003 as a small experiment (under the name Stil) with no particular purpose. After a 4 year distraction, this experiment quickly evolved into what it is today.

The music with its sometimes wildly unpredictable song structures, fast passed rhythmic noise, and ambient textures is heavily influenced by an eclectic mixture of IDM, techno, hip hop, folk, industrial and drum and bass.



Who is Someone Else's Music?

Someone Else's Music is just that, the music that I create. I didn't want to call myself some made up name or use my real name. I toyed around with my initials but in the end… in the flood of songs online and on the radio, it really is just someone else's stuff.

The project is evolving and someday I think it will have a home and I think there is a sound there… I mean I can tell my songs are all by me, but the style changes. One may be techno, another may be solo piano. I make music that I like. I can listen to my CDs and say I like them. I also like making a collection of songs that make sense together. I really can't stand when you put on a CD and there are 10 or 11 tracks that just don't fit together.

Did you grow up in Hampton Roads? If so, what cities? What high schools?

Nope, I'm an import. I came here about 12 years ago from Rhode Island.

Describe your music to someone who has never heard it.

I would say my music sounds like the soundtrack to a very weird driving game.

What is your most crazy show story?

Well I haven't played any solo shows yet so I don't have any from there… I will say I used to have fun getting dress for shows when I was younger… miniskirts, lab coats, and a few other weird getups.

How would you like to see the local music scene change? (venues, fans, other bands)

I would love to see more electronica type shows. They work if the show is promoted to the right crowd and a good venue. Just more diversity in general…Where are the live rap shows, there is the techno IDM type music played? It just seems we live in an area that is locked into a bar band sense and everyone else just tries to slide in here and there.
I'd also like to see more shows where the bands actually sounded like they belong playing with each other.



How do you think we can solve the problems we are having with venues doing little to NO promoting of shows, not paying the bands much, lack of good sound systems, and other issues?

Look, these small venues have a hard enough time promoting their existence. I'm not saying they shouldn't promote there own shows… but ultimately it is the bands job to get the word out who they are and where they are playing. If a venue sees that a band has a following you will see them promote the show… Look at the Norva, Regina Spektor came and you didn't here anything on the radio… but when the Wu Tang Clan came it was advertised on 104.5. The same logic holds true for us smaller acts, dig in and make some of your own noise. No one is interested in you success more than you should be.

As far as pay… if you have a band that gets a consistent crowd and they drink… guess what. You'll be asked back and hopefully will be more likely to get paid.

Basically promote and practice so that you sound good and the crowd is actually at the venue to see you play… not just enjoy (or filter out) the background music while they drink at the local bar. None of this just happens.

What's up for the band in 2008? ( a tour, album?)

New CD… should be done soon. I am very excited about this because I like every song on it a lot. This has been a very stressful time in my personal life and making this CD has been a great outlet for my anger, stress, and depression. Yeah there are glimmers of hope and joy in it but you really have to listen hard to hear them.

Another thing I would like to do this year is figure out some kind of stage show. I really don't want to just stand on a stage with my laptop switching between prerecorded songs but first the CD must be finished… look out for me though.

What local bands and artists do you recommend?

I am going to fly way outside my genre and say check out Grey Matter. They are a great local cover band and the guys are cool.

What are your favorite venues to play at? How would you like to see the available venues to change when booking shows?
(better sound / lights/ pay/ promotions)

Well my favorite place to see a show is at the Norva. Like I said earlier I haven't played out much so I have no experience playing there but know bands that have. I can understand how bands could get frustrated playing there, as well as why the Norva does what it does when it comes to local shows.

The one thing I would say all the other venues can do to improve the draw and response to live music is to put some serious time and energy into their sound systems. We all know that a great sound system can't make a bad band sound good, but a bad sound system can make a good band sound really bad. If a place gets a reputation of having a killer sound system, bands will want to play there… the people who go to shows will catch on that the music sounds good there… wow this works out for everyone!



Who primarily writes the songs? Is there a certain process or does it come out during practice?

I write and record everything myself. Usually I sit down at my computer when I am mad and start messing around making drum beats that almost never get used in the final song. I truly cannot start writing music if I am in a good mood. If I try all it ends up sounding like is Tom Petty guess starting on an episode of the Teletubies.

How do you market your music to the public? What seems to work best for you for letting people know about your shows?

MySpace has been the biggest help so far. I have a very hard time going up to people and introducing myself and through MySpace I have been fairly successful in finding the local crowd that likes my music. Word of mouth is great but been slow. I do have a few fans though so it's starting to take hold.

What is your current favorite song?

Of mine??? Blood Red Sky… you will get to hear it soon. As far as a favorite song of all time that could be hard. Maybe The Becoming by NIN, Ostia (The Death Of Pasolini) by Coil… There could be hundreds on this list.

How much do you think hype affects the public perception of what good music is?

Why wouldn't it. Most people don't care about the details involved with music. They have a favorite pop artist and know the hooks to all there favorite songs. Basically they care about a general style but if you really ask them they don't know about the more obscure bands and groups. The masses aren't looking for complexity or to much meaning. That is why when one of these pop musicians write a great song it stays a great song… if not it plays on the radio and in the clubs until people get bored with it.

Pop music is pop music for a reason. This isn't to say everyone is a mindless robot. A lot of people have favorite CDs that mean something to them… but chances are they to will be great albums put out by otherwise normal popular artists.

Last CD bought, downloaded or stole?

I buy music. I used to download it but I really hate bad versions of good songs. Plus I do place value on a musicians work. A painter paints a picture to sell it, not charge admission to the museum that hangs it… They are getting screwed by everyone, least of all the people download the music. I don't have the answer, just my opinion??? But we still all wonder why it cost $30+ to see our favorite band perform a 45 minute set.

How do you think the local scene is doing? How would you change it?

I think the local scene is very one dimensional. There are a few bar bands and metal acts, and a lot or other types of acts looking for places to play.

I really hate to read… does the reference manual to Reason 4 count?

What's your favorite local restaurant to eat at?

I grew up in Rhode Island around very good home cooked Italian food. I am luck to have found at least one good place here, La Bella down on Laskin Road. There are a few good Sushi places around as well.

What's your worst habit?

When I find out someone will argue the validity of blatantly false religious beliefs I can't help but engage in the conversation. I am not trying to discredit religion or say the belief in God s wrong… just that the belief in anything with a complete disregard to the facts that disprove it is ignorant.

What irritates you?

People who do not except responsibility for there own actions.

What has been your greatest success?

Finding someone to share my life with. That is all.

What has been your greatest setback?

My inability to start conversations with people I don't know.

Who would be in your ultimate music supergroup, your all-star Olympic team of rock?

I could ramble of great musicians here but you would just end up with a cover version of Van Halen (everybody solo!!!!) so here is my super group that I would love to hear. This would be a great band…

Definitely the misery… I didn't start playing guitar until the tenth grade… how many happy teenagers do you know.

What do you think of what MC7C does? How would you make it better? Have you been to any of our events?

I think this site is great. I would love to get more events sponsored by local business as well. The best thing I think MC7C could do in the near future is start a non-myspace website, something that is available to more people. There is so much potential here in Hampton Roads for a great art and music scene and MC7C definitely is steering the masses in the right direction.
